Threats to Project
The land belongs to Stools under the Paramountcy of Akwamu, from whom the land has been leased for 50 years with an option to renew. The perceived threats to the Akwamu Gorge Hills Community Project include the following:
  1. Farms within the project area: These farms are currently illegal and are for subsistence for people who are generally in the know that they would have to quit at short notice. There is assurance from the landowners that these small farmers will be relocated to other areas of their choice
  2. Building projects on the rim: On the lower rims of the operational area are some buildings at various stages of completion. Some of these projects have been abandoned as a result of the project, while others such as the foundation for a museum will be reassigned to tie into the project.
  3. Poaching: It is said that some hunters occasionally enter the Akwamu Gorge forest to hunt for small mammals and birds. As part of the project, there is a sub-project introduced by the Wildlife Division of the Forestry Commission dubbed: Turning Former Poachers into Protectors. The project involves training and employing poachers and the children of former poachers into game and nature protection guards. Others will be trained as Guides for visitors and will be trained, among others, in nature interpretation.
